Ace Von Spade (full name Ace “Freie und Hansestadt” Von Spade) hails from the small and unknown village of Hamburg, Germany. He found his first bass leaning against a bug exterminator van labeled “Beatles” that was parked next to the Indra Club in his home neighborhood of St. Pauli. The bass, a beat up Höfner, had the initials “PM” carved into it, which Ace took to stand for “Play Me.”
Ace taught himself bass with the Höfner until he realized he’d never get any girls playing such a nerdy looking bass. Once he found a bass that better suited his German hypermasculinity, Ace was one of the first men alive to regularly play a five-string bass. He was (and probably still is) the only bassist whose hands were big and strong enough (and his hair lush enough) to prove worthy of fingering that ever-so-coveted low-B note.
Hair Metal Radio discovered Ace busking in a subway station — he’d wired his bass directly to the subway line so that the massive vibrations from his badass playing propelled the subway cars along. Upon a backdrop of windmill headbanging bystanders, HMR recruited Ace right then and there and he’s been keeping fans headbanging ever since.
Although a veteran rock star, bass player, and former beauty pageant winner, Ace is most proud of his cowboy boots, which he purchased from a nice, older woman named Geddy Lee while at Lemmy Kilmister’s estate sale.
Ace joined HMR in 2017 as a replacement for aging drug addict Jizzy Straddlin’, who left to pursue his dream of having “the easiest job in the world” by playing bass in a Creed tribute band.
